Nat Young writes: Originally the painting had a cottage but this seemed to spoil the effect of a vast emptiness given by the land and sky so I took it out.

The dramatic light reflecting on the sea, and the feeling of isolation are all there both physically in the painting and in the mind as well. The texture of the surface of the painting is a technique to demonstrate that the sky and land are never single entities.

I use watercolour, gouache, oils, mixed media often applied on a collage of torn water- colour paper; applying bold colour and dynamic gestures using whatever comes to hand, an old brush perhaps or a knife, to give an impression both of the subject and my artistic response to it.
