Igniting a passion for the land
Sheilagh Jevons writes: "I make work about the landscape in which I incorporate local historical, social and cultural information for example place names, dates, images of landmarks, language and so on. Archival material and archaeological images and events underpin the work and help in creating the concept of ‘a sense of place’.
My work is more about the ‘essence’ of a place as opposed to trying to convey a more literal image. The work explores the landscape abstractly but also incorporates recognisable images. The pictures within pictures give content to the work.
The paintings surface is always worked in a way that creates depth and is often written into with text For example 'Walk' , this is a word that appears in my work frequently as I feel that to really understand a landscape I must walk in it every day."
