My work arises in response to an experience of some kind - an encounter with a place or a landscape. The experience chooses me and I respond. The possibilities come crowding in and I am excited by how I might interpret the information and feelings which the situation creates - what materials I will use and how I will apply them.
I work with these encounters, translating their forms, textures and colour into images of a minimal and often abstract nature. Mostly I use oil on canvas but occasionally I incorporate natural, found materials - sand, earth, etc or print and collage.
I walk a lot and seek out quite places. It is the winter that produces most of my work - I love the colours, textures and the lack of over-dressing with which summer covers the land. I live in the Yorkshire Dales - limestone, hill country where the landscape is already minimal and the ancient barns are full of patina, traces and the remains of their history.
